Alto Tietê System rises 15 percentage points and ends February with 45.5% capacity
The Alto Tietê water supply system in São Paulo has improved to 45.5% capacity due to increased rainfall in February.
According to the Companhia de Saneamento Básico do Estado de São Paulo (Sabesp), the Alto Tietê Producer System concluded February with a capacity of 45.5%, marking a significant recovery with an increase of 15 percentage points since January. This uptick, although positive, still falls short of the 49.1% recorded during the same month in 2025, highlighting ongoing challenges in water resource management amidst fluctuations in precipitation and reservoir levels.
The recovery in capacity is attributed primarily to heavy rainfall experienced throughout February, which exceeded expectations by 12.9%. The anticipated rainfall was 176 millimeters, yet recorded levels reached 199.7 millimeters. Notably, a significant storm event between the 25th and 26th of February contributed 22.2 millimeters in a single day, helping the system to surpass its historical average for February rainfall.
