UFSCar offers rehabilitation for those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

The Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) is developing a rehabilitation program for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in São Carlos, Brazil.

The Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) has launched a pulmonary rehabilitation program that focuses on physical therapy, guidance, and professional support for patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in São Carlos, São Paulo. This initiative comes in response to a 35% increase in COPD cases in the state of São Paulo in 2025 compared to the previous year, highlighting the growing concern for respiratory health among the population.

One of the program's participants is Lourivaldo Alves Moreira, a mechanical turner who received his COPD diagnosis ten years ago. Before this condition was identified, he had not prioritized his health, attributing his respiratory issues to years of working without proper personal protective equipment (PPE). After being diagnosed, he faced significant challenges, particularly shortness of breath, which limited his physical activity. However, through the program, he has witnessed substantial improvements in his condition and exercise capability.

Funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp), the UFSCar rehabilitation program aims to enhance the quality of life for individuals affected by COPD. With a comprehensive approach to treatment, the program not only addresses physical rehabilitation but also offers psychosocial support, allowing participants like Lourivaldo to regain their strength and confidence in managing their health challenges effectively. This initiative represents a significant step towards addressing public health issues related to respiratory diseases in Brazil.
