Piracicaba starts offering palliative care clinic through the SUS
Piracicaba has launched a palliative care clinic within its public health system, catering to patients with severe and life-threatening illnesses.
This week, Piracicaba (SP) has commenced specialized palliative care services within its public health system, expanding healthcare options for individuals facing serious and terminal illnesses. The clinic, located at the Integrated Health Center of Anhembi Morumbi University (CIS-UAM), is accessible to patients referred through the Unified Health System (SUS). The focus of the service lies in symptom management, alleviation of suffering, and enhancement of the quality of life for patients throughout their illness journey.
The establishment of this clinic is particularly significant as it addresses a critical healthcare need for residents suffering from conditions with no potential for cure. The local government emphasized the importance of such services in providing holistic support to patients and their families. In conjunction with the palliative care launch, a new Epilepsy Clinic was also inaugurated at the same health center, indicating continued efforts to enhance specialized healthcare services in the region.
The story highlights personal testimonies of affected individuals, such as Wellington Melo Heiden, a patient diagnosed with advanced colorectal cancer, whose experience underscores the vital role of palliative care in improving life expectancy and quality of life. As local authorities respond to the needs of their community by offering these essential services, it reflects a growing recognition of the importance of palliative care in public health policy and practice in Brazil.
