Finland's star athlete: accident at the gym
High jumper Daniel Kosonen reveals he had an accident during gym training this winter, which impacted his season.
Daniel Kosonen, a prominent high jumper from Finland, disclosed that his indoor season did not go as planned due to an accident he experienced during gym training in the winter. He described the incident, where a careless repetition while performing a single-leg deadlift led to an injury, as quite distressing, admitting that it felt stupid. Kosonen stated that he was already fatigued, and consequently, he suffered a significant injury to his leg that delayed his training schedule by a month.
Despite the setback, Kosonen managed to win his eighth consecutive Finnish indoor championship gold medal, albeit with a modest jump of 209 cm, which he considered embarrassing. He expressed disappointment, stating that such results shouldn't be enough to win anything other than junior competitions. His struggle reflects a broader concern for the sport, as only four men in the competition cleared the two-meter mark. Kosonen voiced worries about the state of men's high jumping in Finland, highlighting a lack of emerging talent compared to women's high jumping, where new athletes are continuously coming into the scene.
Kosonen had previously shown promise at the European Championships last season, where he jumped a respectable 223 cm in the qualifiers. However, his current state raises questions about the future competitiveness of Finnish high jumping. His remarks at the competition serve both as a reflection of his personal journey and as a commentary on the challenges facing the sport in Finland, particularly among male athletes, indicating a need for more attention and development to revitalize the discipline.
