For the first time, artistic photos of the spires are exhibited in the Duomo

The Duomo in Milan is showcasing artistic photographs of its spires for the first time, as part of the exhibition 'Duomo d'autore' that will run until May 24.

Milan's Duomo, originally constructed in the late 1300s, features spires that were completed in the 1800s, reflecting a long history of artistic and architectural development. This exhibition brings to light the lesser-known aspects of the cathedral, which have often been overlooked. The display includes decorations that were replaced over the years due to damage, underscoring the ongoing preservation efforts at this iconic site.

Elisa Mantia, the Coordinator of Culture for the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo and deputy director of the Duomo Museum, along with Alessandra Micheletto from the Archive of the Veneranda, are curating the exhibit. Their expertise highlights that the work on the Duomo is never truly finished, with a collection of around 90,000 images in a phototeca documenting the continuous development and restoration of the cathedral, although not all are on display.

This exhibition marks a significant cultural moment, as it is the first time that artistic photography has been collected from the archives of the Duomo, which has primarily focused on technical photographs documenting restoration efforts. The 'Duomo d'autore' exhibition runs until May 24, providing visitors with a new lens through which to appreciate Milan's historic cathedral.
