On Strengthening the Concept of Family in the Constitution, just over 50 signatures have been collected

More than 50 signatures have been collected in Latvia to support a proposed constitutional definition of 'traditional family.'

Since November 26 of last year, a campaign to collect signatures for the constitutional definition of 'family' has gathered just over 50 signatures in Latvia. The Central Election Commission (CEC) registered a draft law submitted by the 'Latvian Men's Association' which aims to define 'traditional family' in Article 110 of the Constitution. This proposed change implies that the state would emphasize the protection and support for marriage as a union between a man and a woman and the family based on marriage, kinship, or adoption. It also aims to guarantee children's rights, particularly the right to grow up in a family founded on a mother and a father.

To submit the proposed law to the Saeima, the Latvian parliament, it requires signatures from at least 10% of eligible voters, approximately 150,000 individuals in Latvia. Voters have the opportunity to sign in support of these constitutional amendments until November 25, 2026. The right to participate in the signature collection is granted to Latvian citizens aged 18 and over, contributing to the public discourse regarding the definition of family in the country's constitution.
