Elisa warns: Do not buy such a device – it is dangerous even before you open the box

Telecom operator Elisa warns consumers about cheap devices pre-installed with the BadBox malware that can compromise personal data.

Elisa, a Finnish telecom operator, has issued a warning to consumers about cheap devices that come with the BadBox malware pre-installed. The company has observed hundreds of contaminated devices, particularly inexpensive TV boxes and other Android devices, connecting to its network since the beginning of the year. Elisa's cybersecurity chief, Karri Jäkkö, emphasized the risks associated with these devices, as they can be linked to criminal networks that exploit users’ personal information.

The BadBox malware has raised significant concerns as it exposes users to potential identity theft and information misuse. While Elisa is capable of controlling and mitigating harmful traffic within its network, the situation remains problematic for consumers who may not be aware of the dangers posed by these devices. Jäkkö has urged consumers to promptly disconnect any contaminated devices from their networks and to change all related passwords to protect their personal data.

This warning draws attention to the broader issue of cybersecurity in the consumer electronics market, particularly for low-cost devices often targeted by malicious actors. As demand for budget-friendly technology continues to grow, the prevalence of such risks highlights the need for increased scrutiny and consumer education regarding device security.
