A New Danger in Finnish Home Networks – This Device Can Hijack Internet Connections

A new threat has emerged in Finland involving malicious code infecting consumer devices, which is part of a larger scheme by the Chinese company Ipidea to mask internet traffic.

In February, Finnish authorities identified a new cybersecurity threat impacting home networks. According to the Cyber Security Center of Finland's Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom), consumer devices such as computers and smartphones have been compromised by harmful code. This is particularly linked to Ipidea, a Chinese company that operates a proxy service network, which obfuscates the origin of internet traffic by routing it through consumers' home devices, thereby allowing cybercriminals to remain hidden more effectively.

Ipidea has marketed itself as a legitimate proxy service provider; however, investigations reveal that it has employed its network of devices for dubious purposes. While it claims to operate within legal parameters, the evidence points towards malicious activities, raising significant concerns among Finnish cybersecurity experts. Traficom has reported that the Ipidea network is being exploited through malicious files on Windows operating systems and Android applications, with approximately 600 such applications identified. These applications masquerade as legitimate updates, such as OneDrive Sync or Windows Update, but in fact, they connect users' devices to the proxy network, compromising their security.

The discovery of this threat is particularly alarming because it highlights the vulnerabilities that exist within home networks and the potential risks posed by seemingly innocuous applications. As consumers increasingly rely on interconnected devices, the need for heightened awareness regarding online security measures is paramount. Authorities in Finland are urging users to safeguard their devices and to remain vigilant when installing new software, which is critical in combating these emerging cyber threats.
