Recent archaeological findings in Saitama Prefecture have revealed the remnants of a tea house where Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, is believed to have rested following his falconry pursuits. This significant site, located in the city of Kitamoto, was uncovered as part of an ongoing excavation project that began in 2020, with approximately 70% of the outer structure of the tea house confirmed. Historically, there were around 100 such resting facilities for Tokugawa shoguns primarily along the Tōkaidō road, but only a few have been documented in complete form, indicating the rarity of this discovery and its potential to shed light on a lesser-known aspect of Edo period culture.

The area where the tea house was discovered is part of the historical region known as Ishido-juku, located near the Arakawa River. A public meeting was held to inform nearby residents about the discovery and its significance. Representatives from the city’s Cultural Heritage Protection Division emphasized that while the image of a tea house might evoke scenes from period dramas featuring traditional snacks, the actual structure is a substantial and formal facility indicative of administrative use. This notion challenges conventional perceptions of such historical locations and highlights their actual function within the Edo period's societal framework.

As excavations continue, there is hope that further findings may provide a clearer understanding of the tea house's overall structure and significance. This discovery not only contributes to the historical narrative surrounding Tokugawa Ieyasu and his hunting practices but also boosts regional heritage and interest in the cultural practices of the time, potentially leading to increased tourism and educational opportunities in the area.
