Coffees from Chapada de Minas Receive Geographical Indication Seal

Coffees produced in the Chapada de Minas region of Brazil have been awarded the Geographical Indication seal, recognizing their unique quality and identity tied to the local environment.

The Chapada de Minas region, which consists of 22 municipalities in the Vale do Jequitinhonha, has achieved the Geographical Indication (GI) seal for its coffee production. This certification, granted by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), highlights products that are characteristic of specific locations, affirming their reputation, value, and identity. The federal government notes that these products are distinguished by their 'unique' quality due to natural resources such as soil, vegetation, and climate, as well as the methods of production employed in the region.

Efforts to obtain the GI seal began in 2018, spearheaded by Sebrae in collaboration with the Chapada de Minas Coffee Institute (ICCM). With this achievement, Chapada de Minas has become the eighth coffee-growing region in Brazil to be awarded this important seal. The initiatives throughout this process included enhancing the technical and managerial skills of local producers through training, workshops, and visits to industry fairs and events, which all contributed to the elevation of the region's coffee production quality.

The introduction of this Geographical Indication not only aids in recognizing the unique qualities of Chapada de Minas' coffee but also has significant implications for marketing and economic development within the region. By establishing a unique identity for their product, local coffee producers can better differentiate themselves in the marketplace, thus potentially increasing their economic sustainability and fostering a stronger sense of community rooted in their agricultural heritage.
