How to Save Hundreds on Train Tickets

A simple strategy can significantly reduce train fares for trips between Stockholm and Sundsvall, where ticket prices can be cut nearly in half by splitting the journey into two separate bookings.

Traveling by train between Stockholm and Sundsvall typically costs between 500 to 1000 Swedish kronor for a ticket on SJ's express train. However, a recent analysis by Sundsvalls Tidning has revealed that travelers can nearly halve these costs by splitting their journey into two bookings: one for Stockholm to Gävle and another from Gävle to Sundsvall. This approach can drastically lower the price of the overall journey while ensuring no train transfers are necessary.

On March 2, when Dagens Nyheter examined the fares for the same route, they discovered that a single ticket from Stockholm to Sundsvall was priced at 755 kronor, while purchasing the two segments separately totaled just 410 kronor. This results in a savings of 345 kronor for passengers willing to follow this booking strategy. The differences in pricing highlight a significant loophole that savvy travelers can exploit to save money on one of Sweden's busiest train routes.

Peter Kraméus, a press communicator at SJ, explained to Sundsvalls Tidning that the lower prices are influenced by competition with regional transport options along the Sundsvall to Gävle segment. He also noted that similar pricing phenomena can be observed on other routes, suggesting that this could be a broader issue within the ticket pricing structure of Swedish train services.
