Moderates promise millions to reduce ferry ticket prices

The Moderate Party in Sweden has announced plans to allocate millions to lower ferry ticket prices for residents of Gotland.

On Monday, Edward Riedl, the chairman of the Finance Committee and a member of the Moderate Party (M), visited Gotland along with local member of parliament Jesper Skalberg Karlsson to announce plans for reducing ferry ticket prices for locals. The proposal is to be included in the spring budget adjustments in April, a move that will allocate 125 million Swedish kronor for the remainder of the year, with an aim of providing 250 million kronor annually after 2027. This financial intervention is seen as a response to a cheaper traffic agreement that Trafikverket has procured.

Riedl expressed that the focus of the funding is to ensure that residents of Gotland receive the benefits through lower ferry prices, reflecting a commitment to alleviate the cost burdens on islanders. However, while the funding has been secured in principle, details on how the aid will be practically administered are still in development. The party recognizes the complexities related to existing state aid regulations that must be navigated to implement this support effectively.

The announcement comes amid ongoing discussions on the economic challenges facing Gotland and the importance of affordable transport connections for residents and businesses. The Moderate Party's initiative aims not only to ease expenses for locals but also to enhance the overall connectivity of the island, which is crucial for its economic vitality and accessibility for both locals and visitors alike.
