Cinematheque hosts exhibition about filmmakers who 'explore the margins of cinema in Super-8'

The Brazilian Cinematheque is hosting an exhibition from June 27 to July 1 focused on Super-8 filmmakers Pedro Merege and Marcos Bertoni, showcasing their unique explorations within the medium.

The Brazilian Cinematheque is organizing an exhibition titled 'Terra em truque: nas bordas do Super-8,' which highlights the works of filmmakers Pedro Merege and Marcos Bertoni who delve into the margins of cinema through the Super-8 format. Running from June 27 to July 1, the event offers a critical look at how these two artists interpret the Super-8 medium in their own distinct styles, bringing attention to its unique capabilities for storytelling.

The exhibition is structured around two complementary axes: 'Cinema das Fronteiras' and 'Cinema em Estado de Truque,' reflecting the varied approaches of the filmmakers. Curated by Luna Alkalay and Felipe Abramovictz, the event benefits from the academic insights of researchers such as Alfredo Suppia from Unicamp, and Lucas Vega, who organizes one of Brazil's oldest Super-8 festivals in Campinas. This collaboration adds depth to the exhibition, inviting a discourse on the artistic and academic dimensions of Super-8 filmmaking.

In addition to showcasing several curated film sessions, which will last approximately 50 minutes each, the exhibition includes workshops and discussions, enriching the overall experience for attendees. The films presented have been specially digitized for the exhibition, ensuring that both seasoned fans and newcomers can appreciate the artistic nuances of Super-8 cinema, a format that gained popularity in the 1960s for its accessibility and portability.
