Kano to establish 30 learning centres for out-of-school children
Kano State plans to set up 30 learning centres aimed at enrolling out-of-school children, focusing particularly on girls and Tsangaya pupils.
Kano State's Universal Basic Education Board has announced plans to launch 30 learning centres across three local government areas in the state. This initiative targets out-of-school children, with a special emphasis on enrolling girls and Tsangaya pupils who often miss out on formal education. The announcement was made by the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Yusuf Kabir, at an event in Warawa Local Government Area, where he addressed facilitators for the new centres.
The initiative is part of the 2024 UBEC/SUBEB Matching Grant Intervention Programme, which seeks to enhance the educational landscape for disadvantaged groups within the community. By establishing these centres, the government aims to provide structured learning environments to help integrate informal education into the formal system. This move is particularly crucial for girls and Tsangaya pupils, who historically face significant barriers to educational access or drop out early due to societal and economic pressures.
In his speech, Kabir, represented by Aminu Dalha, the Director of Social Mobilisation and Enlightenment, highlighted the significance of the project in improving educational outcomes in Kano State. The learning centres are designed to facilitate a more inclusive education framework, promoting gender equity in education and reducing the number of out-of-school children in the region. The success of this initiative may serve as a model for similar programs in Nigeria and could encourage greater investments in basic education.
