Atibaia, Brazil, experienced intense rainfall on the night of Thursday, September 26, leading to devastating floods that displaced numerous families and necessitated emergency rescue operations. Videos captured by Rede Vanguarda showcase the harrowing rescue of an 80-year-old bedridden man carried by neighbors from his inundated home, alongside scenes of locals struggling to pull a submerged car from the waters. The Plaza do Soldado Constitucionalista was entirely flooded, and a nearby auto repair shop was also overwhelmed as water levels rose sharply.
According to the Civil Defense authorities, by 6 PM Thursday, the Ribeirão das Pedras River had overflowed, affecting residences in the Tanque neighborhood. As a result, at least 25 families were left without shelter, prompting immediate evacuation efforts. Those displaced were temporarily relocated to the former Tanque Railway Station for assistance and shelter while emergency teams worked to manage the evacuation and assess the situation.
City officials and Civil Defense teams have been actively involved in responding to the flooding and supporting affected residents. As of now, there are no reports of serious injuries, but the community faces significant challenges in dealing with the aftermath of this natural disaster, which underscores the need for improved flood management strategies in the region.
