Man dragged by flood in Paraty (RJ) is saved by a chain of residents
A man swept away by a flood in Paraty was saved by residents who formed a human chain to rescue him.
On Thursday, in the Condado neighborhood of Paraty, Brazil, a man was caught in a fierce flood but was successfully rescued by local residents who formed a human chain across the rushing waters. Video footage shared on social media captured the heroic moment as three men joined hands, creating a link strong enough to reach the man and pull him to safety. After his rescue, he was moved to a safer place where the water's force was less overwhelming.
The heavy rainfall that caused this flooding was significant, with the Civil Defense and the Municipality of Paraty reporting a staggering 226 millimeters of rainfall falling between Thursday and early Friday. This deluge resulted in more than just alarming flood conditions; it led to the collapse of bridges and barriers, uprooted trees, and interrupted highways, including portions of the BR-101. As a result, several areas experienced severe disruptions, with additional resources required to manage the aftermath.
In the immediate wake of the storm, residents in the Ponta Negra neighborhood faced significant challenges. Ten individuals were displaced and spent the night at a school facility, while an additional 51 were provided shelter in a municipal school, though 41 of them continued to stay at the shelter as they awaited further assistance. The situation highlights not only the immediate dangers of extreme weather events in the region but also the resilience and solidarity of the local community in times of crisis and disaster response efforts in the face of such adversity.
