Police urge Ondo churches, mosques to suspend night services
The Nigeria Police Force has advised religious leaders in Ondo State to suspend night services amid security threats following a recent kidnapping incident during a church service.
The Nigeria Police Force in Ondo State has issued a warning to religious leaders urging them to suspend night services due to heightened security concerns. This advice follows the recent abduction of six members from the Celestial Church in Uso, indicating a concerning trend regarding the safety of worshippers during nighttime gatherings. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adebowale Lawal, emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and security in religious practices amid these challenges.
The kidnapping incident occurred on February 25 during a midnight service, which underscores the vulnerabilities that religious institutions face in the region. One of the captives was successfully rescued, and an informant related to the case was apprehended, shedding light on the ongoing threats posed by criminal elements targeting religious gatherings. The police reported that the kidnappers demanded a ransom of N100 million for the release of the victims, raising alarm over the financial burdens that families may face in response to such crimes.
In light of these serious issues, the police commissioner articulated that pausing nighttime religious services could assist law enforcement in monitoring activities and mitigating risks associated with such gatherings. The call to action from the police reflects a broader concern for public safety and shows an effort to engage with community leaders in maintaining security, especially during religious observances that take place at night.
