On February 14, 2023, Batista Campos Square in Belém celebrated its 122nd anniversary, with events organized by the Association of Friends of Batista Campos (AABC). The celebration included a symbolic cake cutting as residents of the surrounding area came together to honor this significant local landmark. The square, known for its beautiful French-style design featuring iron kiosks, bridges, and ponds, is a cherished part of the city's heritage.
Originally inaugurated in 1904, Batista Campos Square is named after Canon Batista Campos, a notable figure in the Cabanagem, an important popular uprising that took place in Belém between 1835 and 1840. The square has become a focal point for community gatherings, with local residents actively participating in its maintenance and celebration. The AABC plays a pivotal role in organizing annual events to ensure that the cultural significance of the square is preserved and recognized.
In 1983, Batista Campos Square was officially recognized as a protected historical site, and in 2005, it was celebrated as the most beautiful square in Brazil by an international magazine. This recognition only adds to the importance of the site as a tourist attraction and a symbol of the city’s identity, fostering a sense of pride and community among the residents of Belém as they continue to commemorate and celebrate their local heritage.
