Federal Police and Ibama seize 155m³ of illegally harvested timber in Maranhão

The Federal Police and Ibama seized 155m³ of illegally harvested timber during an operation called 'Logística Reserva' in Maranhão, Brazil.

The Federal Police (PF) and the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) have seized 155 cubic meters of illegally harvested timber in Buriticupu, Maranhão, located 395 kilometers from São Luís. This seizure is part of the ongoing operation entitled 'Logística Reserva', which commenced on the 9th of October and focuses on illegal logging activities in the region. As of the 11th of October, the operation has led to 12 infractions being recorded, accumulating fines totaling R$ 265,000.

The operation specifically targeted illegal sawmills and wood operations, highlighting a concerted effort by Brazilian authorities to combat deforestation and illegal logging in the Amazon region. The confiscated timber was allocated to various governmental bodies, including the Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration (SEAP), FUNAI (the National Indian Foundation), and the Military Fire Department. This allocation indicates a strategic move to repurpose seized resources for public benefit rather than allowing them to go to waste.

According to FUNAI's regional coordination, part of the seized timber will be returned to indigenous communities as a collective benefit. This initiative reflects a dual approach to enforcement: addressing illegal activities while also supporting indigenous peoples in the region. Such operations are crucial for maintaining ecological balance and protecting the rights and resources of local communities against illegal exploitation of natural resources.
