Riga prepares for possible flooding
Riga's Civil Protection Commission convened to assess preparations for potential flooding due to rising temperatures and snowmelt.
In anticipation of potential flooding, Riga's Civil Protection Commission met following forecasts from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre regarding an increase in temperature on February 27. This winter has resulted in significant snow and ice accumulation, raising the risk of floods in historically susceptible areas of the city. If a rapid thaw occurs along with rain, this risk is expected to increase dramatically, making proactive measures crucial.
Riga has deployed multiple resources to combat potential flooding, including four cutters, motorboats, and various pumping equipment to drain water. The city has conducted a thorough assessment of available resources and has mapped out population density to identify areas and the number of residents who might require assistance. Such thorough planning ensures a rapid response can be mobilized in the event of an emergency.
Moreover, Riga has expressed readiness to provide support to neighboring municipalities if necessary. The city maintains close communication with all responsible services in order to act swiftly when threats of flooding arise, demonstrating a proactive and coordinated approach to disaster preparedness and response in the face of changing seasonal conditions.
