With the onset of spring, the melting ice on the Daugava River has begun to flood the lower areas of the Jēkabpils district. Flooding has primarily affected the municipalities downstream of the city of Jēkabpils, particularly due to an ice jam that formed at the Zeļķu bridge. However, the situation in Jēkabpils itself remains calm as the river ice is melting gradually. Concerns over spring floods have prompted some residents to arrive earlier to monitor the situation at their rural properties, revealing a proactive approach to potential water damage.

The properties near the Zeļķu bridge are regularly impacted by floods due to their low-lying position alongside the Daugava River. As a result of the ice jam, several summer cottages and access roads have already been inundated. Local resident Aigars shared that last year the water reached up to the eaves of his summer house, and as a precaution, he has moved valuable items to safety ahead of this year's flooding. Another resident, Vladimir, recounted his experience of last year when his summer cottage swayed like a boat in the water; thus, this year, he has constructed almost two-meter-high foundations for his house as a preventive measure.

Reports indicate that this year's flooding situation in Latvia may be significantly more complicated than in previous years, suggesting challenges ahead for the residents of Jēkabpils and the surrounding regions. The ongoing concerns about the ice and flooding highlight both the vulnerability of the areas affected and the preparedness efforts of the local population, emphasizing the importance of community resilience in facing seasonal natural events.
