Holidays for 1,500 euros, treatment – for 140,000: Lithuanians suffered severe burns
Lithuanian travelers face exorbitant medical costs abroad, highlighting the unpredictability of injuries during vacations.
Insurance companies have reported concerning trends in the costs incurred by travelers requiring medical treatment abroad, where expenses can surpass 100,000 euros within a few days. According to Karolina Emanuelė Karpova, director of the Claims Department at BTA Insurance Company, travelers often overlook potential risks that can drastically change the course of their holiday. Simple mishaps, such as slips or food poisoning, could swiftly escalate into situations demanding comprehensive medical assistance or even medical evacuation.
Karpova underscores that while people generally plan their itineraries with great detail—from choosing attractions to booking accommodations—unexpected incidents can disrupt those plans. She noted that it only takes one unfortunate meal or a misstep to lead to serious complications, not just for the vacation experience but particularly for financial burden related to medical needs. The alarming reality is that treatment costs for severe injuries, like fractures requiring surgery, can reach costs around 100,000 euros, placing significant stress on travelers and their insurance arrangements.
The discussion of travel safety and insurance underscores the growing need for awareness among vacationers about protecting themselves against unforeseen events. As more Lithuanians travel abroad, understanding the implications of medical insurance and the potential costs of treatment is crucial for ensuring a financially secure holiday experience, particularly in unpredictable environments where accidents can happen without warning.
