V. Benkunskas: Green hydrogen production planned to start this autumn, with hydrogen-powered buses to be launched

This autumn, Vilnius plans to initiate green hydrogen production and launch hydrogen-powered public transport buses as part of its commitment to achieve zero CO2 emissions in its public transport and heating sectors by 2030.

The mayor of Vilnius, V. Benkunskas, announced a significant step towards sustainable energy by planning to start green hydrogen production this autumn. This initiative aligns with Lithuania's commitment to the European Union to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions in public transport and the heating sector by 2030. The production trial is set to begin soon, with the acquisition of hydrogen-powered buses nearing finalization.

The municipality is currently conducting a re-tender for the purchase of these buses, with the winner expected to be selected in March. The initial phase will include renting hydrogen-powered buses, with a total of 16 vehicles planned for ownership by the Vilnius public transport authority. This move is part of a broader strategy to modernize public transport in the capital and reduce the carbon footprint of public services.

Benkunskas emphasized that the first 10 hydrogen-powered buses could hit the streets as early as November, highlighting the city's proactive approach in embracing green technologies. This initiative not only contributes to local environmental goals but also positions Vilnius as a progressive city in the sphere of sustainable transport within the EU context, demonstrating leadership in addressing climate change through innovative energy solutions.
