Bareilly: Attempted self-immolation at police station, one officer and six policemen suspended
A delivery executive attempted self-immolation at a Bareilly police station due to negligence in handling his complaints, leading to the suspension of seven police personnel.
In a shocking incident in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, a delivery executive named Akshay Kumar attempted self-immolation at the Baradari police station after his grievances went unheard. Kumar had visited the station three times on the same day to lodge complaints but claimed that the police staff, particularly Sub-inspector Surendra Sharma, ignored him, prompting his desperate act. The police's negligence and lack of response to his complaints have raised serious questions about their accountability and duty towards citizens seeking help.
Following the incident, Senior Superintendent of Police Anurag Arya took swift action by suspending Sharma and six other constables associated with the police station, highlighting the department's responsibility to address such incidents. An investigation initiated by the City SP, Manush Parikh, found Sharma complicit in the disregard shown towards Kumar's repeated requests for assistance. This move reflects a broader need for police reform in India, especially in how precincts manage public grievances.
This case has sparked outrage among the local populace, illustrating the critical importance of police responsiveness and the dire consequences of negligence. Authorities must now not only address this particular case but also implement measures that ensure citizens' complaints are taken seriously, guarding against such tragic incidents in the future.
