Report centres charging above N8,700 UTME fee, JAMB tells candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in Nigeria has urged candidates to report any test centres overcharging for UTME registration fees, reaffirming the approved fee structure.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) of Nigeria has issued a statement advising candidates preparing for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to report any examination centres that charge above the officially sanctioned registration fees. According to JAMB's spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, there have been reports of centres overcharging candidates, leading to concerns about fairness and compliance with the established pricing. JAMB has made it clear that the approved fees for the UTME remain N7,200 without the mock examination and N8,700 with the mock, alongside a lower fee of N5,700 for Direct Entry candidates.

In light of potential overcharging, JAMB is encouraging candidates to provide credible evidence when reporting non-compliant centres. This initiative aims to protect candidates from exploitation and ensure that they pay only the mandated fees. JAMB has indicated a readiness to investigate any complaints received and to impose sanctions on centres found engaging in such unethical practices. This proactive approach highlights the board's commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the admissions process.

The call for reports signifies an ongoing effort by JAMB to maintain oversight over the examination registration process, amplifying the importance of adherence to approved fee structures. By pressing candidates to report discrepancies, JAMB hopes to deter sharp practices and ensure that students can focus on their studies without the added burden of financial exploitation during this critical phase of their educational journey. Ensuring compliance with these regulations underscores JAMB's role in the higher education system in Nigeria, promoting equitable access to university admission for all candidates.
