Professor Shim Jae-kwan of Sangji University named president of the Indian Philosophy Association
Professor Shim Jae-kwan has been elected as the president of the Indian Philosophy Association, with a term running from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2027.
Professor Shim Jae-kwan from Sangji Universityβs FIND College has been elected president of the Indian Philosophy Association for a two-year term starting January 1, 2026. Established in 1988, the Indian Philosophy Association is a national scholarly organization that deeply researches and analyzes the philosophical significance of traditional Indian practices, including Buddhism, Hinduism, yoga, and meditation. The organization is known for hosting regular academic conferences biannually and publishing the journal 'Indian Philosophy' three times a year, having released a total of 75 issues since its inception.
In addition to its conferences and publications, the association runs seminars and reading programs aimed at fostering the next generation of scholars while promoting Buddhism and Indian philosophy through public lectures and outreach. The association also focuses on the specialization of yoga instructor training and academic research related to traditional practices, intertwining theoretical and practical scholarly activities. Professor Shim emphasized the historical significance of Wonju, where Sangji University is located, as an area where Buddhism and Christianity have played important roles, particularly as a spiritual home for the Buddhist Seon tradition.
In his remarks after being elected, Professor Shim expressed his commitment to advancing the academic development of both Wonju and Sangji University, assuring that he would do his utmost to contribute to the academic landscape through his new role in the Indian Philosophy Association. His background includes graduating from Dongguk University with a degree in Indian Philosophy and earning both his master's and doctoral degrees from the same institution, along with extensive teaching and research experience in notable universities in South Korea, including Dongguk, Kumgang, and Seoul National Universities.
