VIDEOS capture landslides in Juiz de Fora; houses are hit
New landslides in Juiz de Fora caused homes to collapse following heavy rainfall, resulting in casualties and significant displacement of residents.
On Thursday afternoon, serious landslides occurred in Juiz de Fora, Brazil, exacerbated by heavy rainfall that measured 113 mm overnight. This incident has led to the collapse of at least two houses while the region already faces devastation from previous floods that have resulted in dozens of fatalities and thousands displaced from their homes. Eyewitness footage from the Bom Clima neighborhood revealed significant soil movement, creating a cloud of dust and raising concerns among the local population.
The emergency services, including the Body of Firefighters, are actively searching for any potential victims from the collapsed buildings. Fortunately, reports indicate that three individuals were rescued by bystanders without requiring medical assistance. Meanwhile, further damage was noted in the Vitorino Braga neighborhood, where homes previously evacuated have also succumbed to the ongoing instability of the landscape due to persistent rainfall and land erosion.
According to data from the National Center for Monitoring and Natural Disaster Alerts (Cemaden), Juiz de Fora ranks as the ninth Brazilian city with the largest population living in areas at risk for such natural disasters. The recent events highlight the pressing need for monitoring and improving infrastructure in these vulnerable areas to prevent future casualties and better manage potential crises.
