Rain Returns to Juiz de Fora on Wednesday and City Experiences New Landslide; VIDEO

Heavy rain caused a new landslide in Juiz de Fora, Brazil, resulting in a house collapse and emergency response activations.

Juiz de Fora faced another round of heavy rain on Wednesday, leading to significant weather-related issues in the area. The local Civil Defense recorded a landslide in the Três Moinhos neighborhood, where a house collapsed, prompting emergency responders from the municipal government and the Fire Department to take action. Street access has been restricted on Diva Garcia in both directions to ensure safety during rescue and cleanup operations.

The National Center for Monitoring and Alerts of Natural Disasters (Cemaden) reported that the hardest hit area was Santa Rita, recording 21.82 mm of rain in just one hour, while other nearby neighborhoods also experienced substantial rainfall, such as Graminha and the city center. Additionally, TV Integração journalists captured footage of severe flooding on a street in the Bom Jardim neighborhood, further highlighting the impact of the inclement weather conditions on local infrastructure and communities.

In the tragic aftermath, there were victims, including a nursing technician who was rescued after being trapped for over 15 hours under debris but unfortunately did not survive, as well as a correctional police officer who lost his life while trying to save his wife and other residents from the flood. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges of managing natural disasters in urban environments and the urgent need for effective disaster preparedness and response measures.
