Rain causes landslides, risk of collapses, and cracks in Manaus this Thursday (26)

Intense rain in Manaus has led to multiple incidents of landslides, structural cracks, and potential collapses in the city.

On Thursday morning, Manaus experienced intense rainfall that resulted in at least six reported incidents across various districts of the city. The Centro de Cooperação da Cidade (CCC) reported occurrences of landslides, wall cracks in buildings, and a serious risk of structural collapse, particularly in areas known for being unstable. The East Zone saw a landslide, while the North Zone had cracks reported in residential properties, and the West Zone reported two additional cracks, one structural collapse risk, and an open storm drain.

Residents communicated these risks through the Disque 199 hotline operated by the Civil Defense, which is accessible 24 hours a day. In response to the conditions, local authorities dispatched teams to inspect the affected areas and take necessary actions to ensure public safety. The city’s Administration is advising residents to remain vigilant, particularly in regions deemed at risk of additional incidents, emphasizing the importance of reporting any signs of damage such as cracks or signs of landslides.

This situation underscores the challenges faced by urban areas in managing heavy rainfall impacts, especially in regions where the infrastructure may not be equipped to handle extreme weather events. It serves as a reminder of the potential hazards associated with urban expansion into vulnerable zones and the need for continuous monitoring and preparedness in light of climate change-induced weather patterns.
