Latvia's Saeima has passed a law increasing housing benefits to assist citizens in paying for their homes while mitigating debt; additionally, the country faces flood risks from a harsh winter, and a new regional office has been opened by LSM to enhance media presence in Latgale.

The Saeima of Latvia has recently passed legislation to increase housing benefits, aimed at helping residents manage housing costs and reduce debt levels. This new law will extend support from January to May, allowing approximately 7,500 more people to qualify for these benefits. The average monthly increase per recipient is projected to be about 46 euros. While the lawmakers voted unanimously in favor, opposition voices suggested that the government could have provided more comprehensive assistance, such as cutting energy taxes, to better support citizens

As Latvia experiences a harsh winter characterized by heavy snow and ice, the Ministry of Agriculture has issued warnings regarding potential flooding in the spring. If the current snow melts rapidly, there is a risk of elevated water levels that could lead to flooding in low-lying areas. The dangers include ice and debris damaging drainage systems and inundating crops and buildings, prompting landowners to inspect and clear ditches and culverts to mitigate these risks.

In a move to strengthen media representation in regional Latvia, LSM has launched its first regional office in Latgale. This new editorial branch will focus on creating content in Latvian, Latgalian, and Russian, aiming to enhance communication and information dissemination within the local communities. This initiative reflects an effort to cater to the diverse linguistic demographics of the region and foster a more inclusive media environment.
