In Latvia, the Minister of Welfare, Reinis Uzulnieks from the Green Party, has proposed significant changes to the housing benefit program that aims to expand eligibility and increase the financial assistance provided. This initiative, which has already received public backing from Prime Minister Evika Siliņa of the New Unity party, is designed to support individuals and families facing increased housing costs, particularly as January has seen historically low temperatures, impacting living conditions for many.

Uzulnieks highlighted that the proposed adjustments could potentially add an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 new recipients to the housing benefit program, allowing those who previously could not qualify to receive support. The planned increase in the benefit calculations is expected to rise by around 30%, providing more substantial financial help to vulnerable populations, which includes elderly citizens and families with limited income. For example, a pensioner with a monthly income of €500 currently paying €300 for housing costs would stand to benefit significantly from these changes.

As Latvia grapples with rising living costs exacerbated by the harsh winter, this policy shift reflects the government's commitment to addressing social welfare issues.
