Partially changing plans for the reorganization of the music and art school after parents' protests in Limbažu district
Parents are protesting against the reorganization of music and art schools in Limbažu district, which they believe will negatively impact the quality of education.
In Limbažu district, around 50 parents gathered outside the municipality building protesting against the proposed reorganization of local music and art schools. The protestors fear that merging these institutions could lead to their decline, voicing concerns that their unique qualities would be lost. One parent, Lolita Jauntēva, expressed her belief that combining the schools would not yield positive results, claiming that it could lead to the complete disappearance of the music school.
Teachers and parents voiced their frustration over local government officials who they believe are not consulting with educational professionals before making these significant changes. Olga Graudiņa, a teacher at the music and art school, criticized the decision-making process for being rushed and unprofessional, arguing that officials are displaying a superficial understanding of the educational needs. Parents like Liene Some-Tiesnese articulated hopes for a dual-model education system that allows Salacgrīvas Music School and Art School to retain their distinct identities rather than being absorbed into a larger institution.
In response to their concerns, protestors submitted a petition with 1,896 signatures to the local government ahead of the council meeting. The presence of opposition deputies at the meeting indicated a supportive political climate for the protestors, suggesting local governance may need to reconsider its approach in light of public sentiment against the planned reorganization.
