'Lack of security and poor conditions': CRM inspects Areolino de Abreu Hospital after patient is killed

The regional medical council conducted an inspection at Areolino de Abreu Hospital following a fatal incident, uncovering significant security and structural deficiencies.

The Regional Medical Council of Piauí (CRM-PI) conducted an inspection of the Areolino de Abreu Hospital in North Teresina after a patient was murdered at the facility. The inspection, carried out on the morning of Thursday, October 26, revealed alarming findings about the hospital's lack of armed security and inadequate infrastructure. Currently, the hospital relies solely on property surveillance and auxiliary agents for patient management, a model deemed inadequate given the high-risk situation surrounding patient care at the facility.

Additionally, the CRM-PI's report highlighted significant gaps in healthcare assistance, particularly during nighttime shifts where the absence of a nurse on duty raises serious concerns about patient safety and care quality. The report criticized the limited number of doctors available to monitor and prescribe medication to patients adequately, which compromises the overall reliability of medical services provided in the hospital. These findings suggest a systemic failure in maintaining quality healthcare and ensuring patient safety in the facility.

The situation is further exacerbated by the stalled renovation works at the hospital, with only about 25% of the proposed improvements completed. This significant delay not only affects the hospital's operational capacity but also its potential to provide an adequate level of healthcare service to the community. With the lack of progress and the pressing need for better security measures, the CRM-PI's findings could prompt urgent calls for reform and increased investment in the healthcare infrastructure of the region, especially in light of the recent violent incident.
