The agreement on free movement between Gibraltar and Spain will be signed next month

An agreement aimed at removing border checks between Gibraltar and Spain following years of negotiations is slated to be signed next month.

The upcoming agreement between the UK, representing Gibraltar, and the European Union aims to eliminate physical barriers for people and goods moving between Spain and Gibraltar. This agreement, reached last June after years of challenging negotiations, follows significant tension between London and Brussels after the UK's Brexit referendum in 2016, leading to its exit from the EU. The draft, released recently, comprises over 1,000 pages and is expected to enhance the movement across the border while maintaining Gibraltar's status as a British territory.

The recent announcement was made by UK and Gibraltar authorities, who expressed confidence that the signing of this agreement will take place next month. The British Foreign Office Minister Stephen Doughty indicated that the necessary steps, including ratification and implementation are still pending. Under the terms of the agreement, the usual border checks, which previously saw around 15,000 people crossing the border daily, will be lifted, significantly improving cross-border access and trade.

This development holds importance not only for Gibraltar but also for the local populations of Spain, with many workers commuting daily to Gibraltar for employment. The removal of checks is expected to facilitate easier transit and bolster economic ties. The agreement may also set a precedent for future negotiations between the UK and EU as they navigate their post-Brexit relationship, making it a focal point of interest in European discussions on regional mobility and cooperation.
