Schengen rules will apply at Gibraltar border under finalised post-Brexit deal
A new post-Brexit deal allows for smoother border crossings at Gibraltar, eliminating routine passport checks for daily crossers while implementing dual checks for air and sea arrivals.
The latest post-Brexit agreement concerning Gibraltar introduces the application of Schengen rules at its border, significantly easing the passage for the approximately 15,000 individuals who cross daily from Spain into Gibraltar. Routine passport checks will be abolished at the land border, which aims to facilitate more fluid movement of people and goods between these territories. This change is expected to foster better relations and greater ease of access as long as it remains within the British jurisdiction of Gibraltar.
However, the deal stipulates that individuals arriving by air and sea will still be subject to dual passport checks. Passengers will be required to present both Gibraltarian and Spanish documents, essentially reinforcing Spain's role in border controls while adhering to EU regulations. This measure is designed to manage arrivals and ensure that security protocols remain in place despite the absence of routine checks at the land border.
In conjunction with the revised border checks, the agreement outlines plans for a customized customs model aimed at reducing lengthy goods inspections, thereby promoting trade efficiency. This comprehensive border framework signals a strategic move by the UK, Gibraltar, and the EU to pragmatically address the realities of post-Brexit arrangements, balancing autonomy and collaboration at this unique border crossing.
