Traffic Changes Planned in the Historic Centre of Rīga
Rīga plans to implement traffic changes in its historic center to improve air quality as outlined in the city's air quality improvement action program for 2026-2030.
In an effort to enhance air quality in Latvia's capital, Rīga, the city council has proposed several traffic changes within the historic center, as part of the air quality improvement action program for the years 2026-2030. This initiative was formally accepted by the Rīga city council on February 26 and aims at reducing emissions from public transportation. Key measures include expanding the public transport network and modernizing existing routes to facilitate better access and lower emissions.
Among the proposed measures are the construction of a new public transport line on Dzelzavas Street, the expansion of the Pierigas rail transport network, and the introduction of traffic lights specifically for public transport vehicles. The plan also envisions an expansion of the bus network within the metropolitan territory of Rīga and the establishment of new mobility points around the city, particularly near railway stations, enhancing connectivity and convenience for residents and visitors alike.
Additionally, the city aims to provide online access to real-time information regarding the monitoring stations and the observed results from air quality assessments. It also includes efforts to inform the public about reducing individual heating emissions. Collectively, these initiatives reflect the city's commitment to improving urban air quality and promoting sustainable transport solutions, showcasing a proactive approach to environmental challenges in urban settings.
