BE CAREFUL ⟩ "You can't see the yard from Muhvi!" Freezing rain falls in various parts of Estonia

Freezing rain has been reported in several regions of Estonia, creating hazardous conditions on roads and surfaces.

On Thursday, changing weather conditions caused freezing rain to fall in various parts of Estonia, leading to hazardous situations. The Environmental Agency shared a video of the freezing rain filmed in Põlvamaa just minutes before 3 PM. In the capital city, Tallinn, residents took to social media to report similar weather conditions, highlighting the severity of the freezing rain and its impact on visibility and safety.

Meteorologist Kairo Kiitsak noted that the freezing rain is dangerous as it often leads to the formation of a slick layer of ice on surfaces and objects with temperatures below 0 °C. This phenomenon is known as black ice when it occurs on the ground and is usually seen prior to a thaw caused by an incoming warm front. The freezing rain is relatively rare and typically occurs during transitional periods between autumn and winter or winter and spring.

The Environmental Agency cautioned citizens about the potential danger posed by freezing rain, advising them to be cautious while traveling. As the country braces for heavier snowfall and blizzards moving across Estonia, especially in the morning hours, individuals are urged to prepare for changing conditions, which may also include rain and freezing rain throughout the day across the mainland.
