Conductor Imants Resnis has passed away

Imants Resnis, former long-time leader of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, has died.

Imants Resnis, a notable conductor and cellist, passed away, leaving a significant impact on Latvia's music scene. Born in Riga, Resnis studied cello from 1956 to 1967 and later graduated from the Latvian State Conservatory in 1972 as a cellist and in 1982 as a conductor. His artistic career has been closely linked to the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra since 1967, where he initially performed as a cellist before transitioning to conducting in 1987.

Resnis gained international recognition as a conductor in 1988, participating in the 'Prague Spring' festival with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra. His leadership abilities became prominent when he assumed the role of artistic director and chief conductor of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra in 1992. Additionally, he founded the International Piano Stars Festival in 1993, which continues to attract pianists from around the world each March, further solidifying his legacy in the arts.

His contributions to music education and orchestral performance not only shaped the cultural landscape of Latvia but also influenced many aspiring musicians. The loss of Imants Resnis is felt deeply within the music community, where he is remembered as a pioneer who fostered creativity and excellence in classical music.
