Imants Resnis, a respected figure in the Latvian music scene, passed away on February 26, 2026, at the age of 76. Born on March 12, 1949, in Riga, he had a lifelong dedication to music, beginning his cello studies at the Emīls Dārziņš Music School and later graduating from the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian State Conservatory in 1972. Over the years, he established himself as both a talented cellist and a renowned conductor, notably performing with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra since 1967, where he initially started as a cellist before becoming a conductor in 1987.
Resnis’ contributions to music extended beyond performance, as he took on educational roles, becoming a professor at the Latvian Academy of Music. His conducting skills were honed under the tutelage of Genadi Rozhdestvensky at the Moscow State Conservatory. He gained international recognition in 1988 for his work at the "Prague Spring" festival with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, marking a significant milestone in his career.
In 1992, Resnis became the chief conductor of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, further cementing his legacy in Latvia's classical music landscape. His death is a great loss to the cultural community, and he is remembered for his invaluable contributions to music and education in Latvia.
