Côte d'Ivoire: a theater and dance piece to restore the image of a neighborhood in Abidjan

A new theater and dance production in Abidjan aims to improve the image of the poorly perceived Abobo neighborhood.

In Côte d'Ivoire, a contemporary theater and dance piece titled 'Abobo Gare' has been presented by choreographer Hermann Nikoko Yao at the French Institute. This performance is designed to shift the negative perceptions of Abobo, a neighborhood in Abidjan that has often been associated with danger and violence, earning it the nickname "Abobo-la-Guerre." The production begins with somber and contorted visuals that represent suffering, highlighting the struggles within the community, especially reflecting the challenges of urban life.

As the performance progresses, it transitions into a more vibrant and expressive display, showcasing the dynamic logobi dance, which draws inspiration from street culture and the daily realities faced by residents. This pivot in the narrative is intentional, as Yao aims to juxtapose the grim stereotypes of Abobo with the rich cultural expressions found within the neighborhood. By emphasizing the exuberance of dance and colorful costumes, the piece seeks to redefine and celebrate local identity.

Through the work of Hermann Nikoko Yao, this theatrical initiative not only aims to entertain but also fosters a sense of pride among community members while challenging outsiders’ perceptions. Such cultural productions play a crucial role in reshaping narratives around marginalized areas, ultimately promoting a more positive image and encouraging community engagement in the arts, which is vital for social cohesion and modern urban identity in Côte d'Ivoire.
