In Thessaloniki, a significant trial is underway regarding an alleged fraud involving an archimandrite and a former priest, accused of deceiving churchgoers out of over 1.3 million euros. The case is being heard at the Three-Member Court of Appeals for Serious Crimes in Thessaloniki and centers on claims made by believers connected to the Church of Cyril and Methodius. The archimandrite reportedly told his flock between 2018 and 2023 that he was making serious efforts to claim the position of Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, leading to substantial donations purportedly meant to support his cause.

The accused include a 70-year-old archimandrite, who has been suspended from his clerical duties and is currently in provisional detention, and a 63-year-old former priest, who is in custody as well. Additionally, two laypersons aged 53 and 36, involved in the case, are currently released under restrictive conditions. According to reports, the accusations stem from complaints from six church members who claim they were tricked into believing the archimandrite would soon rise within the church hierarchy, particularly following the passing of the previous Metropolitan, Anthimos.
