Ioannina: Arrest of a 'priest' for impersonation and fraud
A 47-year-old man was arrested in Ioannina for impersonating a priest and committing fraud, alongside four accomplices.
In Ioannina, Greece, a 47-year-old man has been arrested for impersonating a priest and engaging in continuous fraudulent activities. The arrest was made by officers from the Special Crimes Unit following complaints that the man, who had been defrocked, was using a house belonging to one of two women to conduct Christian religious ceremonies without permission. The man allegedly deceived citizens with various promises during these unlicensed gatherings.
Additionally, two women and two men were also taken into custody for their roles in facilitating these acts and for harboring the man. The police conducted a search at the residence where items such as liturgical vessels, priestly garments, and religious images were seized, indicating the extent of the fraudulent operations conducted under the guise of religious authority. The operation reflects ongoing concerns about unsanctioned religious practices and public deception.
Investigations are still ongoing to uncover any potential involvement of the 47-year-old in other criminal activities. Those arrested will be presented to the First Instance Prosecutor in Ioannina, where further legal proceedings will take place to address these serious allegations of fraud and impersonation.
