A man who defrauded buyers of cars and their parts will face trial

A man in Lithuania faces trial for defrauding multiple buyers of cars and car parts through fake online advertisements.

In June 2024, authorities began an investigation after a victim reported being defrauded of €500 when he attempted to purchase car rims from a seller he found on social media. Despite an agreement on payment and delivery, the rims never arrived, nor was the money refunded. It was discovered that at least one other individual had been similarly scammed, while five others showed interest in fraudulent listings for various brands of cars on an online platform.

The suspect allegedly had made contracts with buyers where they would transfer advance payments between €1,000 and €2,000 to a small company's bank account, which had been established in early 2024. However, this company was not conducting any legitimate business activities and failed to submit tax declarations to the State Tax Inspectorate. The investigation indicates that systematic fraud was carried out under the pretenses of this company while at least seven victims were exploited in the process.

The case highlights the growing issue of online fraud in Lithuania and raises concerns regarding consumer protection in digital marketplaces. As more buyers turn to the internet for their purchases, it underscores the need for stronger oversight and regulations to safeguard consumers from fraudulent schemes. The suspect's upcoming trial is expected to shed more light on these practices and may prompt further scrutiny of online selling platforms.
