Helsinki man sold non-existent goods online - defrauded over 80 buyers

A Helsinki man has been charged with fraud after selling fake products online and scamming more than 80 customers out of their money.

Helsinki police have advanced a case against a man accused of defrauding numerous buyers by selling products that he did not actually possess. The man conducted sales via platforms such as Facebook, Huuto.net, and Tori, offering items including DVDs, phones, headphones, watches, beauty products, dishes, glassware, and children's clothing. Buyers who paid for these products were left empty-handed, receiving neither the items nor refunds.

The police received the first report of the fraud in late 2024, and subsequently, numerous additional complaints followed, leading to a total of 83 reports related to the case. The most recent complaints were filed in early 2026, indicating the ongoing nature of the man's deceptive practices. Authorities revealed that the scam resulted in losses amounting to over 2,500 euros, showcasing the financial impact on the victims involved.

A man in his forties from Helsinki has been arrested on suspicion of multiple counts of fraud, and during interrogations, he admitted to his actions. This case highlights the increasing issue of online fraud and the need for vigilant consumer protection, as more people engage in digital marketplaces without verifying sellers' credentials or the legitimacy of their offerings.
