Recommendation for Chun Young-sik, a member of the Broadcasting and Media Telecommunication Committee, rejected
A proposal by the ruling People Power Party to appoint Chun Young-sik to the Broadcasting and Media Telecommunication Committee has been rejected by the National Assembly, while the Democratic Party's proposal for Go Min-soo passed successfully.
On the 26th of the month, the National Assembly rejected the recommendation for Chun Young-sik to be a member of the Broadcasting and Media Telecommunication Committee, a position nominated by the ruling People Power Party. The vote on Chun's candidacy resulted in 116 supporting votes against 124 opposing votes, alongside 9 abstentions. In contrast, the Democratic Party's nomination for Go Min-soo, a professor at Gangneung-Wonju National University, was accepted with a significant majority of 228 votes in favor, 17 against, and 4 abstentions.
The rejection of Chun was largely attributed to his controversial background as the head of a media organization criticized for its extreme positions and for endorsing the 12·3 rebellion. Democrat Kim Hyun-jeong highlighted Chun’s prior publications justifying martial law and supporting rebellion, which contributed to the friction with the ruling party. The opposition party, the Justice Party, also expressed disapproval, categorizing Chun's role as a staunch supporter of the controversial administration.
Following the vote, People Power Party floor leader Song Eon-seok expressed indignation over the decision, denouncing it as a violation of the spirit of legal rights granted to parties for nominations. Song mentioned that such rejections based on political biases threaten future cooperation in the National Assembly, indicating a potential escalation in tensions between the ruling and opposition parties regarding legislative functions.
