Election of Go Kwang-hun as Chairman Candidate for the Broadcasting Media Communication Review Committee... Union Demands Withdrawal of Kim Woo-seok

The Broadcasting Media Communication Review Committee selected Go Kwang-hun as its chair candidate, while the labor union demanded the resignation of member Kim Woo-seok due to alleged political bias.

The Broadcasting Media Communication Review Committee (BMCRC) held its first general meeting on December 12 at the Seoul Mokdong Broadcasting Center, where they elected Go Kwang-hun, former president of the Seoul Shinmun, as the chairman candidate. Lawmakers discussed nominations, resulting in Kim Min-jung from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies being elected as vice-chair. The chair candidate is subject to a personnel hearing before the official appointment by President Lee Jae-myung. However, the committee was unable to elect a permanent member this time, likely affected by controversies surrounding Kim Woo-seok.

The National Union of Media Workers has called for the resignation of committee member Kim Woo-seok, who served under the previous chair, Ryu Hee-rim, known for his partisanship and punitive actions against critical media. In a press conference held just before the committee meeting, the union expressed their outrage over Kim's continued involvement, citing his previous attempts to influence elections in favor of the ruling party. They criticized him for leading a regime of censorship against critical media while supporting initiatives they deemed detrimental to the integrity of the media review process.

During the protests leading up to the meeting, union members temporarily occupied the corridor outside the meeting room, holding placards asserting that 'Kim Woo-seok must resign' and denouncing the return of Ryu Hee-rim's legacy. The tensions highlight the polarized atmosphere surrounding media regulation in South Korea, where political influence in media oversight remains a contentious issue.
