Sheep Pox: New Arrests for Non-Compliance with Safety Measures
Four individuals were arrested in Greece for violating safety measures to prevent the spread of sheep pox.
On February 25, 2023, local authorities in Greece conducted arrests in Elassona, Tyrnavos, and Farsala for breaching safety protocols concerning the outbreak of sheep pox, a contagious disease affecting sheep and goats. The arrests highlight ongoing efforts by law enforcement to enforce compliance with agricultural health regulations after the recent emergence of the disease in these regions.
One notable arrest occurred near Elassona, where a local individual was apprehended for grazing 30 sheep approximately 80 meters from the sheepfold, a clear violation of the designated safety measures aimed at limiting the disease's spread. In a related case in Tyrnavos, police from the Preventive and Mediation Team arrested two individuals—one local and one foreigner—for grazing 120 goats and sheep about 450 meters from proper enclosures.
Additionally, in Farsala, law enforcement arrested one more person for allowing four of his sheep to graze merely 10 meters from the sheepfold. These actions underline the significance of adhering to biosecurity measures in livestock management, especially in the wake of health threats like sheep pox, which can have severe implications for the agriculture sector in Greece.
