Kėdainiai Prepares for Possible Flood, Soldiers Scout the Area
Kėdainiai is preparing for potential flooding due to heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures this winter, as well as the threat of ice jams affecting the area.
This winter has brought significant snowfall and severe cold in Lithuania, raising concerns about potential severe flooding in river areas and the danger posed by ice jams to both the environment and property. Local authorities in Kėdainiai are particularly worried after the statistics revealed an unusual spike in precipitation levels in February, with some regions, like Kelmė, reporting precipitation levels much higher than the long-term average. This unexpected weather pattern has prompted immediate discussions among district leaders and specialists about emergency response protocols.
The Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service indicated that from December to January, precipitation was below normal (52% and 65% respectively); however, a marked rise occurred in mid-February, with the average precipitation reaching 105% of the norm. The recent snowfall indicates a displacement of winter weather conditions, potentially leading to more severe flooding situations. As a response, preparations may involve strategies such as monitoring river levels and assessing the need for ice jam management through possible demolition or controlled explosions of ice formations.
While accurate predictions extend only three days into the future, the ongoing evaluations of weather patterns and their implications in Kėdainiai are critical. The local government’s response reflects proactive measures to ensure resident safety by considering the effect of extreme weather and the possible need for evacuations or protective measures to minimize damage to properties and the environment during the flood season.
