The ferry Tõll returns to the line via the unofficial mainland-Hiiu ice road
The ferry Tõll is resuming service on the Virtsu-Kuivastu line using an unofficial ice road due to difficult ice conditions in the Irbe Strait.
The ferry Tõll, owned by TS Laevad, is set to resume its route between Virtsu and Kuivastu following maintenance work in Tallinn. Due to severe ice conditions in the Irbe Strait, the ferry is opting for an unofficial ice route that connects Topu Harbor and Hiiumaa, instead of its regular path which has been obstructed by thick ice. The transportation authority's ice breaking coordinators and the Botnica icebreaker team have reported that the ice thickness in the crucial area exceeds one meter, making navigation perilous without an icebreaker’s assistance.
Indrek Randveer, the chairman of TS Laevad, emphasized the challenges posed by the ice, which includes substantial ice packs that hinder safe passage. As weather conditions are expected to worsen with strong winds and rising water levels in the coming days, the ferry service may face additional disruptions. Given these complexities, the transport company is appealing to both residents of Hiiumaa and its visitors for understanding and patience as adjustments to regular service are made to ensure safety while maintaining connectivity between the island and the mainland.
The situation underscores the importance of reliable ferry connections for the residents of Hiiumaa, particularly during the winter months when travel becomes more difficult due to ice. TS Laevad is working hard to navigate these unforeseen challenges, ensuring that commuters can still access essential services on the island, despite the unpredictable winter weather.
