Shortage of part-time firefighters – see if SVT's reporter has what it takes to pass the test

There is a significant shortage of part-time firefighters in Sweden, with ongoing recruitment challenges despite a recent uptick in applications in some regions.

In Sweden, the demand for part-time firefighters has been steadily increasing, but recruitment efforts have faced major hurdles. Many of the positions remain unfilled, as prospective candidates often do not meet the requirements for various physical and skill tests, which include strength assessments and swimming ability. Abdulla Owada, a participant in a current assessment, expresses optimism about meeting the challenges ahead, although he acknowledges that the tests might be tougher than they appear.

The situation in southern Dalarna reflects a similar trend, where local fire service authorities have struggled to attract part-time firefighters in previous years. However, there are signs of improvement, according to Håkan Wikman, the administrative manager of the Södra Dalarnas räddningstjänstförbund. He notes that despite the challenges, there is an increase in applications for part-time firefighting positions, suggesting a possible reversal of the previous trend.

The importance of part-time firefighters cannot be overstated, as they constitute around two-thirds of all firefighters in Sweden. Their role is crucial, especially in less populated areas where full-time firefighters are not always present. Addressing recruitment challenges is essential to ensure that public safety and emergency services remain robust and responsive across the country.
